THE FORERUNNER

"Where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever" (Hebrews 6:20, RSV).

This unique title is of Pauline coinage; it is found nowhere else in the Bible. It describes one who goes in advance, a scout who goes ahead to prepare for an expedition (see Isaiah 40:3).

The designation, "forerunner," most fittingly describes Jesus who is the great pioneer and trailblazer of His redeemed people. As a forerunner, He ascended to glory for the express purpose of making the final preparation for the establishment of His kingdom of glory. In His valedictory address, Jesus told His disciples that He would go to heaven to prepare a place for them (see John 14:3). As the forerunner, He is now "within the veil" (Hebrews 6:19) preparing the way through His atoning blood and high priestly ministry on our behalf.

The forerunner's precious promise is immutable (see Hebrews 6:17). His promise is full of hope and assurance. He said, "When I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John 14:3, RSV). The triumphant entry of our forerunner into the heavenly sanctuary, coupled with His immutable promise, is the guarantee of our promised homeland.

Commenting on Christ, the forerunner, Ellen G. White wrote: "We must by faith enter within the veil, 'whither the forerunner is for us entered' (Hebrews 6:20). There the light from the cross of Calvary is reflected. There we may gain a clearer insight into the mysteries of redemption... Jesus has opened the way to the Father's throne, and through His mediation the sincere desire of all who come to Him in faith may be presented before God."--Lift Him Up, p. 329.

My Prayer Today: Lord, I claim anew the immutable promise of the forerunner. May His return be soon. Amen.
